Knight
Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics
The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics was
formed by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in October 1989 in
response to more than a decade of highly visible scandals in college
sports. The goal of the Commission was to recommend a reform agenda
that emphasized academic values in an arena where commercialization of
college sports often overshadowed the underlying goals of higher
education.
Must see web site with reports and studies concerning intercollegiate
athletics! Start with the About
Page.
WVU athletics -- where are we now? A professional
sports farm team with coaches paid more than a number of athletic
programs combined? Is the athletic department controlled by the
university? Check out this web site!

AP Commentary -- By
Myles Brand, President of the NCAA
From
the Myles Brand Commentary --
"I
firmly believe it is shortsighted to eliminate sports and reduce
opportunities for a broad and diverse spectrum of student-athletes.
Intercollegiate athletics administrators should not make the mistake of
equating the lack of revenues produced or the cost of conducting these
sports with the value they bring, both to the individual
student-athlete and to the institution."
"The most important thing
in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most
important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The
essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."
